Thanksgiving & Christmas in Cloudcroft 2026: A Holiday Guide for Big Families

Some families want a beach for the holidays. Others want pine trees, a fire, a long table and a decent chance of snow. If that's your crew, the Sacramento Mountains around Cloudcroft are hard to beat, and late November through December is when the village leans all the way into it. Here's what's happening for Thanksgiving and Christmas 2026, what to do with a houseful of people, and how to plan it so everyone gets to sit at the same table.

Thanksgiving weekend in Cloudcroft

Thanksgiving is a quiet, cozy time on the mountain. The summer crowds are long gone, the air smells like woodsmoke, and mornings are cold enough that the first cup of coffee really matters.

The day after Thanksgiving, the village kicks off the season with the Cloudcroft Christmas Market on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 27–28. The Chamber of Commerce lists it starting at 10 a.m. Friday and wrapping up at 4 p.m. Saturday, with the venue and vendor details still to come. It's the easy way to do Black Friday: local makers, stocking stuffers and no parking-lot battles.

A simple plan for a four-night Thanksgiving stay:

  • Wednesday: Grocery stop in Alamogordo on the way up, then settle in. Check-in at the lodge is after 3 p.m.
  • Thursday: Cook, eat, nap, repeat. Walk off the pie with a short hike on the Mexican Canyon Trestle Trail in Cloudcroft.
  • Friday: Christmas Market and Burro Avenue. Leftovers for dinner.
  • Saturday: White Sands for sledding and sunset (more on that below).

Eating out on Thanksgiving Day? Options in a village this size are limited and many places close for the holiday. If you'd rather not cook, call restaurants directly and reserve well ahead. Otherwise, plan to cook in.

Christmas in Cloudcroft

The big event is the Mountain Christmas Village, Dec. 11–19, 2026, put on by the Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber's listing shows it opening at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11 and closing at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, so plan on an evening outing and dress for it. Nights at Cloudcroft's elevation, more than 8,600 feet, are well below freezing in December. The schedule of activities hadn't been posted when we wrote this, so check the Chamber's events page before you go.

Local calendars also list the village's outdoor ice rink at Zenith Park as opening for the season on Oct. 31, which gives the kids something to do on any December visit. Confirm hours before you go.

Cut your own Christmas tree in Lincoln National Forest

With a permit, you can cut your own Christmas tree in Lincoln National Forest, and the Sacramento Ranger District around Cloudcroft is one of the places to do it. If you're driving home to El Paso, Las Cruces or West Texas after Thanksgiving, you can take the tree with you.

The Forest Service hadn't posted 2026 dates and prices when we wrote this. For reference, last season's permits were sold from Nov. 13 through Dec. 31, 2025 on Recreation.gov, and cost $10 per tree plus a $2.50 online service fee. Expect something similar this year, and check the Lincoln National Forest Christmas tree page in early November.

The main rules from the Forest Service:

  • Your tree can't be taller than 10 feet, and you take the whole tree. No cutting the top off a bigger one.
  • Don't cut on private land, in wilderness areas, within 300 feet of a campground or trail, within 100 feet of a paved road, or in replanted or active timber sale areas.
  • Print your permit and display it on your dashboard.
  • Forest roads may not be plowed. Bring a paper map and a handsaw, and be out of the woods before dark.

Snow: tubing, skiing and free sledding

First, the honest part: snow in southern New Mexico is never guaranteed, especially before Christmas. Plan a trip you'd enjoy either way, and treat snow as a bonus.

Ski Cloudcroft is the southernmost ski area in New Mexico, a small, family-friendly hill two miles east of the village. It now has snowmaking on the beginner slope and tubing hill, and says it aims to open those areas by the middle of December. It's open seven days a week over the Christmas holidays and on weekends the rest of the season. Thanksgiving weekend is usually too early.

What to know about tubing, based on Ski Cloudcroft's posted 2025–26 information (2026–27 rates weren't up yet):

  • Sessions are two hours: 9–11 a.m., 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. and 2–4 p.m. Last season's price was $36 per person, tube included.
  • Riders must be at least 42 inches tall and ride in their own tube. No lap riding, no exceptions.
  • There are no reservations, and each session is capped at 200 people. The afternoon session often sells out, so big groups should get there early.

Free sledding: If you packed your own sleds, head for the national forest instead. Ski Cloudcroft points sledders to the snow play area at Upper Karr Canyon, off the Sunspot Highway south of Cloudcroft, and the Forest Service notes that the Silver and Deerhead campground areas are popular for sledding and tubing after a fresh snowfall. Roads to these spots can be snow-packed, so check conditions first.

The no-snow backup: sledding at White Sands

If the mountain doesn't deliver snow, you can still go sledding, on sand. White Sands National Park is about 30 minutes from High Rolls, and the cooler months are a comfortable time to be out on the dunes. They also make a great backdrop for the family Christmas card photo.

  • Closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The National Park Service says the park is open daily except those two holidays. Go the day before or after.
  • Entrance is $25 per vehicle, good for seven days. With a big group, carpooling saves money.
  • Sleds: Waxed plastic snow saucers work best. You can rent or buy them at the park gift shop, or bring your own.
  • Missile tests: The road into the dunes sometimes closes for up to three hours for testing on the neighboring missile range. Check the park's closures page the day before.

Where to stay: one cabin for the whole family

The hardest part of a big family holiday is finding one place that fits everybody. Most cabins around Cloudcroft have a bedroom or two, which means splitting the family across several rentals. White Wolf Lodge is a four-bedroom cabin in High Rolls, about 15 minutes below Cloudcroft, that sleeps up to 15 under one roof.

  • A kitchen that can handle the feast. Gas range, dishwasher, island seating and a farmhouse table inside, plus a long table on the covered deck for mild afternoons.
  • Beds for three generations. Four bedrooms and 9 beds over two floors, with three full bathrooms. Grandparents get a quiet room, and the cousins get a bunk room of their own.
  • Things to do between meals. A pool table den, smart TVs for the football games, and a pellet stove to gather around when it's cold.
  • The view and the visitors. A two-story wraparound deck, mule deer in the yard every day, and a fire pit whenever fire restrictions allow.
  • A handy location. Alamogordo's supermarkets are 10–15 minutes down the hill for the thing you forgot, Cloudcroft is 15 minutes up, and White Sands is 30 minutes away.

Winter driving: The last stretch to the cabin is a steep gravel road. AWD or 4WD, or at least good tires, is strongly recommended, especially in winter. High Rolls sits well below Cloudcroft, so it usually sees less snow than the village, but come prepared and carpool up the hill when you can.

A couple of house rules to know before you invite everyone: the lodge has a strict no-pets policy, and it isn't available for parties or events. A family of up to 15 registered guests sharing a holiday is exactly what it's for.

Holiday weeks are the first to go. Check your dates and request to book. Booking direct skips the platform fees, and you'll deal with the family that owns the cabin.
