Hunting Unit 34 in 2026–27: Elk & Deer Dates, Tips and Where to Stay near Cloudcroft

Fall in the Sacramento Mountains means bugling elk, crisp mornings and trucks with blaze orange on the dash. If you drew a Unit 34 tag this year, or you're planning next year's application, here's what you need to know for 2026–27: season dates, the rules that trip people up, and how to set up a comfortable base camp near Cloudcroft.

Unit 34 at a glance

Game Management Unit 34 covers about 1,686 square miles of southern New Mexico, wrapping around the south side of the Mescalero Apache Reservation. It's big, rugged country, running from about 4,300 feet in the foothills to about 9,600 feet on the high ridges. Roughly two-thirds of it is public land, mostly in the Lincoln National Forest, including the White Mountain Wilderness.

Elk are the main attraction, and Unit 34 is the state's southernmost premium elk unit. The unit also holds mule deer, black bear and Barbary sheep. NMDOW has reported that elk populations in the Sacramento Mountains (Units 34 and 36) keep growing. It has added antlerless hunts to raise harvest there and notes that hunter success in these units is typically above the state average.

Cloudcroft is the unit's hub for supplies, fuel and a hot meal. Alamogordo, down the mountain, has the big-box stores. White Wolf Lodge sits in High Rolls, between the two, about 15 minutes from Cloudcroft and minutes from the forest.

Reservation boundary: The Mescalero Apache Reservation is tribal land with its own permits and rules. A state license does not let you hunt it. Carry an ownership map and know where the boundary is.

2026–27 Unit 34 elk hunt dates

All Unit 34 elk hunts are draw hunts. Bag limit codes: ES = either sex (any one elk, including spike bulls), A = antlerless, APRE/6/A = a bull with six or more points on at least one antler, or an antlerless elk.

Didn't draw? Unit 34 also has private-land (ranch-only) elk authorizations. In the primary management zone, the 2026–27 ranch-only seasons for Unit 34 include bow hunts Sept. 1–14 or Sept. 15–24, a muzzleloader, crossbow and bow season Oct. 17–21, and any legal sporting arm hunts of any five consecutive days from Oct. 24–Dec. 31. Antlerless-only ranch hunts run any five consecutive days from Oct. 24, 2026 to Feb. 10, 2027. These go through participating landowners and outfitters, so start calling early.

Unit 34 deer hunts are also draw hunts. The bag limit for each hunt listed is FAD, a fork-antlered deer.

Applying for next season

New Mexico's big game licenses come through a spring draw. For 2026–27, the elk and deer application deadline was March 18, 2026, and it usually falls in March each year. Up to four hunters can apply together on one application. Nonresidents can't apply for antlerless elk draw licenses, so nonresident groups should look at the either-sex hunts or private-land options. Chronic wasting disease: know the rules before you go

NMDOW lists chronic wasting disease (CWD) as detected in Unit 34. That brings extra rules on how you can transport and process a harvested deer or elk, and on testing. Read the CWD section of the 2026–27 booklet (page 28) before your hunt, and plan how you'll handle your animal before you pull the trigger. It's much easier than working it out at the truck.

Planning tips for hunting the Sacramento Mountains

• Plan for four seasons in one week. Mornings in the high country can be well below freezing in October and November, and early snow is common. Afternoons can still be warm in the sun. Pack layers.
• Find water. In dry stretches, elk and deer concentrate around water. Scout tanks and springs before opening day.
• Carry an ownership map. Public forest, private ranches and tribal land sit side by side. A mapping app with land ownership layers is worth the subscription.
• Check fire restrictions. Lincoln National Forest often has Stage 1 or Stage 2 fire restrictions during dry periods. Warming fires and camp stoves may be limited, and the rules apply to hunters too.
• Mind the altitude. Hunting between 7,000 and 9,500 feet is hard work if you're coming from lower ground. Drink more water than you think you need and give yourself a day to adjust.
• Book lodging early. Rooms in and around Cloudcroft fill up fast during the rifle hunts.

Where to stay: a base camp for the whole hunting party

Much of the lodging around Cloudcroft is built for couples and small families: cozy cabins with a bedroom or two and little room for gear. Hunting parties need the opposite. White Wolf Lodge is a four-bedroom cabin in High Rolls that sleeps up to 15, so the whole group can stay under one roof.

• Room for the whole party. Four bedrooms, 9 beds and three full bathrooms, so nobody fights over the shower at 4:30 a.m.
• Built for gear. A garage-level entrance, a washer and dryer for muddy clothes, and space to lay out packs and boots.
• A kitchen for early breakfasts and big dinners. Gas range, dishwasher, a long table inside and another on the covered deck.
• A place to tell the stories. A fire pit (when fire restrictions allow), a pool table den and a pellet stove for cold nights.
• A good location. 15 minutes to Cloudcroft, 10–15 minutes to Alamogordo for supplies, and minutes from Lincoln National Forest.

Heads up: The last stretch to the cabin is a steep gravel road. AWD or 4WD, or at least good tires, is strongly recommended.
